3x3 Eyes was a popular manga spanning 15 years (1987-2002), spawning two brief OVA series and several video games. The PC-Engine game 3x3 Eyes Sanjiyan Hensei was released on 07.08.1994 with a hybrid format (SCD+ACD).
VHS: The PC-Engine game was packaged with a five minute anime videotape.
So, what differences emerge when playing 3x3 Eyes with an Arcade Card versus a CD•ROM2 Card?
Well, several years ago, a fellow PCE enthusiast asked that very question. He created a video (24.3 MB .avi) ▼ featuring side-by-side comparisons (SCD vs. ACD) of two cinema scenes from 3x3 Eyes.
HIS RESULTS? In his own words (emphasis added): "3x3 Eyes for the PC Engine is a bi-compatible CD•ROM2/Arcade Card CD-ROM game. When running in Arcade Card mode, the game (a) preloads several sequeces that would load separately in CD•ROM2 mode. The Arcade Card mode also (b) adds some new animation to the opening cinemas."
EXTRA SCENE: An exterior shot of several passengers exiting a subway car was added to the ACD version.
EXTRA ANIMATION: The SCD version features a static image of passengers holding the handpulls inside a subway car. The ACD version, in contrast, is animated (the handpulls/arms rock back and forth rhythmically).
Overall, the ACD version is more endearing (with all of its nuanced details), but the load times for the cinemas, though less frequent than the SCD version, are more noticeable because they have been consolidated.
MANY THANKS go out to Black_Tiger for creating the 3x3 Eyes video. Be sure to visit superpcenginegrafx.net for excellent, additional PCE content.
