The Zenki FX Poster (1294x2075 .jpg) ▼ features a striking composition (and character design) by Yoshihiro Juroiwa. Released on 12.22.1995, Kishin Doujin Zenki FX contains some of the nicest 2D sprite design and animation on the PC-FX console.
MANGA: Birthed as a manga in 1992, Kishin Doujin Zenki proved popular enough to span four years (ending in 1996), but not before it was adapted as a 51-episode anime television series in 1995. In true cross-promotion fashion, Zenki FX was released three days before the anime's finale aired on 12.25.1995.
HYBRID GAME MECHANICS: Zenki FX straddles between at least two genres. At its heart, it is a "scripted, linear" fighting game (think Street Fighter Lite, but with only a few playable characters, a very limited repertoire of moves and no choice of stage selection).
All major opponents and bosses are presented as one-on-one fighting confrontations; the sequence of battles is linear and closely tied to the story. To introduce some variety, these fighting segments alternate with brief, side-scrolling beat-em-up stages. Despite the presence of these mini-stages, however, the beat-em-up mechanics comprise less than 15-20% of the total game.
