PCE MOUSE + HuPGA TOUR = GOLFER

The logo for the PCE Mouse is cute as hell. 'Nuff said.

According to the January 1994 issue of Dengeki PC Engine, TTi was planning to localize Power Golf 2 for North America. The status of the localization effort (assuming it had even been started) before TTi shuttered its doors is unknown.

Of course, even if Power Golf 2 had been localized and released for North America, it is certain that the PCE Mouse would have remained in Japan. TTi was not in the financial position to release peripherals, especially one supported by so few games…

TV TOKYO: Did you notice the screenshot of Golfer—an "acclaimed television broadcast" by TV Tokyo? This was a weekly television show airing on Friday nights, which suggests that Hudson was hoping to appeal to adults and serious golf fans. Hudson wanted to emphasize that Power Golf 2 was a serious simulation of golf (with an emphasis on building a career, practicing techniques, replaying/analyzing "video footage" of your performance, etc.) as opposed to a "kiddie golf game" lacking depth.

HuPGA TOUR vs. ST. CREEK: Before licensing became the norm in sports games, designers would fabricate entire worlds. When executed with care, the result was a unique experience in a unique world. Details, then, were crucial to avoid a generic experience. Power Golf 2 straddles between fabrication (HuPGA Tour) and official licensing (St. Creek Golf Course, for example, is a real course located in Aichi). Power Golf 2 takes itself very seriously—witness the names and characteristics of golf courses, clubs, professional organizations, driving ranges, shops, equipment, etc. For my tastes, this game falls too heavily into the genre of simulation; I would much prefer the pacing and immediacy of a "kiddie" golf game with arcade-action leanings. Pick-up-and-play-now.
